Eamonn McCarthy’s Crewe side took the scalp of yet another PIL side in a Cup competition as they saw off Queens University at Crewe Park in the Steel & Sons Cup to begin their 22/23 season.
The home side started the stronger and it wasn’t surprising when the deadlock was broken. After a defensive mix-up the ball fell to Eamonn McAllister who found a pinpoint finish into the top corner from 30 yards as he lobbed McCooey in the Queens goal.
Crewe kept the pressure on and McCooey was again involved as he pulled down the relentless Dan Smith for a penalty as the Crewe talisman tried to round him when through on goal. Smith dusted himself off but tucked his penalty the wrong side of the post.
The second half was an even affair with Queens perhaps having more possession but new signing Charlie Eaton in the Crewe goal had little that troubled him.
It was a hard fought and deserved win for Crewe against a Queens side many of whom played in the Championship last season. Crewe played some lovely football at times and matched it with determination to win the game.
Crewe will now travel to Belfast to take on Davy McAlinden’s Shankill United at the Hammer Complex on 20th August.
